Eye eye...

Does anyone have any experience with Extended or Continuous Wear contact lenses?

Extended Wear = Leave em in for a week, night and day
Continuous Wear= Leave em in for a month, night and day

See (har!), I wear glasses most of the time for convenience - I'm far to lazy to put lenses in every morning - but I like to wear contacts when I go out. I used to get 30 pairs every three months, and since I only ever used about 5 pairs a month, I built up a stockpile! A contact lens mountain as it were. I cancelled my order when we moved over to Ireland.

This mountain is now a tiny hillock. I am running out. Looking online, there are some great deals for daily disposables, but the Extended and Continuous Wear ones caught my eye (har again!).

I love the idea of not having to put lenses in every day, but it feels a bit icky having them in constantly for up to a month... I'm sure they wouldn't be able to sell them if they were bad for you, but still...

I'm tempted to order some of the weekly ones, and see how I get on. They are a bit more expensive than the daily ones, but I think the convenience would easily outweigh the small price increase.

Has anyone tried them?

I haven't and like you tend to have a stockpile as I don't wear mine all the time. A friend of mine though had continuous wear ones and can no longer wear contact lenses of any sort after getting an infection that caused problems with her eyes, but that may just be her

  Rampage says you're supposed to have checkups to make sure things are OK, sounds sensible to me. And expensive.

    Yes she went every three months which is when they discovered the infection. At the moment because I rarely wear them, I only have to go and get checked once a year, so happy to keep it like that lol

I thought about getting them at Christmas, but my optician told me that you have to be checked up really frequently over the following months to make sure your eyes are reacting well to them. So I didn't bother.

A friend of mine has them though, and he's never had any problems apart from when it's really smoky - then his eyes turn red and he has to take them out.

  Hmm. I read something about lenses possibly causing small growths on the eye, but that was normal lenses, not specifically these ones.
  
  Maybe I'll nip to the opticians and see what they say about them. I could always order them off the internet and have a couple of checkups if I need to.

    My sister got that with normal monthlies, but that was cos she used the wrong solution. So I'm pretty reluctant to buy from anywhere other than my optician.

      Well with the daily ones, they come in the little packet with their own solution, so that doesn't bother me. The lenses I'm talking about are the same brand as the ones I use now, so I'm confident I'll be OK in that respect, it's just the fact of leaving them in so long - I think I'm worried about, like, bacteria and stuff like that.
      
      Soy commented about protein buildup and blood vessel growth - I'm googling away madly!

I havent used them myself but know 2 people who have used the continuous wear ones. It isn't a comfort thing - the problem is that however permeable the lens is, it still doesn't fully allow air to get to your eye, which can cause extra growth of blood vessels and massive protein buildup. I have ones that are removed at night and cleaned and are supposed to last me a month but I have to change them every fortnight at //least// because I'm particularly prone to protein buildup, so I dread to think how bad it gets on ones you don't even take out. Since I spent a fortune on new glasses I haven't worn contacts at all and I'm changing to a supply of 12 daily pairs a month and don't think I'll use all of them.

Umm yeah, point of post, neither of those people lasted longer than a few months with them, they were more hassle than the disposable ones.

    Towards the end of the month they were agony and they needed lots of eye checkups.

      The things I'm reading say that you should take them out and give your eyes a rest if you feel any discomfort. With the weekly ones, I could wear them for maybe 5 or 6 days, and have a day or two with my specs on... Hmm.

        I would go for weekly ones, if you really want to go down the non-removable route. I think monthly ones, there's just too much potential to get an infection or damage the blood vessels.

        Yup, I think I'll give them a go, but I'm going to go and speak to an optician tomorrow to see about checkups. It doesn't seem sensible to keep them in your eyes for a whole month, but plenty of people seem to use them with no problems.
        
        In the course of my googling for possible contact lens related problems, I just read about horrid water-borne parasites so I'm not digging any deeper or I'll never bathe again.

i use to have contacts a long time back i first got the continous but kept getting eye infections then i went to normal but had the same problem, the cause apparetnly is im allergic to the build of protein on the lenses iw cant afford to try the daily ones though so glasses it is for me

I love my dailies, wouldn't ever swap them, they're the most comfortable ones I've ever tried out of all of the options.

And seeing as laser surgery is out for me, it's just as well.

  It's 27 Euro for a check up, so I'll try some of the weekly ones for a while and then go have a check up in a month or so, I think. Maaaarvellous.

Have been wearing glasses since the spring, I like them now, and see no point in contacts, but I'm lacking soem kind of vanity gene...
I also have no problem with onset of wrinkles, should that ever happen... I got IDed a few months ago!
